First Women of the Engineer Regiment
Col. Marsh Killam -- First female engineer officer. She was a former member of the Women’s Army Corps who joined the engineer branch when it opened to women in 1976. First female Director of Common Leader Training at the Army Engineer School in 1999.
Col. Dorothy Klasse – First woman to lead a USACE district when she took command of Sacramento District in 1996.
Col. Yvonne Prettyman-Beck – First female African-American district commander; took command of Norfolk District in July 2003. First female chief of staff in USACE Headquarters in 2006.
Col. Laura Loftus – First female commander of the 4th Engineer Battalion, 3rd Combat Team in the armored Brigade of the 1st Cavalry Division. She served as the S-3 armor brigade engineer in Iraq, and led efforts to reshape local government there in 2004.
Col. Debra Lewis – A member of the first class of women to graduate U.S. Military Academy at West Point. First female district commander of Philadelphia and Seattle districts. First woman to command a USACE district in Iraq in 2006.
Col. Victoria Bruzese – First female garrison commander of Fort Wainwright, Alaska in 2001. First female garrison commander of Fort Hood, Texas in 2004.
Col. Margaret Burcham – First female commander of the 94th Engineer Battalion in Vilsek, Germany in 2000. First female commander of Europe District in 2005. Commanded Gulf Region North District in Iraq in 2008.
Col. Susan Myers -- First female first company commander of C Co., 94th Combat Heavy Engineer Battalion in 1996. First female commander of 554th Engineer Battalion at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. First Director of Leadership Studies at the U.S. Army War College in 2007.
Col. Carla Coulson – Deputy division commander of Southwestern Division in 2000; among the last to serve in the Women's Army Corps which disbanded in either 1977
Col. Janice Dombi – First woman to lead a USACE division when she took command of South Pacific Division in 2009. First female commander of the 864th Combat Battalion (Heavy). First woman to command a USACE district overseas when she took command of Far East District in 2004.
