Corps general measures up Los Angeles District processes

By Lee Roberts

LAS VEGAS – A general from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Headquarters, Washington D.C., measured up Corps processes supporting Air Force missions today while touring Los Angeles District projects at Nellis Air Force Base here and Creech Air Force Base in Indian Springs, Nev.

Maj. Gen. Jeffrey J. Dorko, deputy commanding general, Military and International Operations, visited with base leadership at both locations, inspected construction projects, and received briefings from Corps members assigned to project offices at both locations.

While touring a construction site, which is the future squadron operations building for the 64th Aggressor Squadron at Nellis, the general spent time answering questions about the Corps’ mission and relationship with the Air Force. He stressed the importance of ensuring the best quality facilities are always provided in support of Airmen both at home station and while deployed.

“We’re committed to delivering the best quality facilities on time and on budget so that we can fulfill that trust that the Air Force has placed on us,” Dorko said.

The general previously spent the day March 3 in Los Angeles touring Corps’ building projects before traveling to Nevada. His trip to the Los Angeles District provided him an opportunity to meet with various Corps’ partners, most notably at Air Force installations in Nevada to ascertain how the Corps can better support Airmen, their families, and operations.

“I guess I’m out here to check to make sure we’re fulfilling what we promised to the Air Force,” Dorko said. “It also gives me an opportunity to meet our workforce here and to see the fruits of their labor. We have a lot of great folks who are working here, laboring day by day to provide the best possible facilities.”

At both Air Force installations in Nevada, Capt. Ben Ashton, a project engineer assigned to Creech, and Robert Caskie, deputy area engineer in the Arizona and Nevada Area Office in Phoenix, gave the general a window tour to point out completed Corps building projects, and stopping to tour current construction sites.

The general also took time to meet in briefing rooms with Caskie; Ashton; Col. Thomas Magness, commander of the Los Angeles District; John Keever, district engineer; and other Corps officials at both installations to get updates on current and future projects, and to ascertain what issues exist that can be taken back to Washington D.C., to address processes and policies that affect jobs in the field.
