LOS ANGELES -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District inducted former employee Kelli Johnson into its Gallery of Distinguished Civilian Employees in a ceremony May 8 at the District headquarters.
Retiring in 2016 as the chief of the District's Programs and Project Control Branch, was recognized as a dedicated public servant who earned the respect and trust of District commanders and senior leaders throughout her 34-year career.
"Kelli was such a powerful force for this District," said David Van Dorpe, deputy district engineer and chief of the Programs and Project Management Division. "The role that she played in PPMD as programs branch chief was extremely important to ensure that our District had a viable program each and every year."
Johnson, who began her career in 1982 as a clerk typist, said she was honored to be recognized for her work in the Los Angeles District.
"I was truly blessed to spend my time and my career here," she said. "Wonderful opportunities, great people to work with, wonderful staff; I couldn't have asked for more."
Johnson said she is second generation Corps, whose father worked at Corps headquarters.
"I was actually born into the Corps family," she said. "I may have worked 30-some years, but I feel like it was 50-plus. It's great; wonderful family."
A large poster with a photo of Johnson was ceremonially unveiled during the event. Her name will be inscribed on a perpetual plaque that has been displayed at the District headquarters in Los Angeles since the inception of the award in 1983.
The induction was in conjunction with the District's annual Retiree Recognition Day. More than three dozen retirees participated in the day's activities, which included a breakfast social with current employees, a commander's update presentation and a catered lunch.
District Commander Col. Aaron Barta expressed his appreciation for the retirees and the legacy they set for the District.
"The District maintains its reputation, its history and its pride," he said. "I thank you for really being invested in the Corps; the Los Angeles District remains strong because of you."
