    Helping hands: ERDC employees volunteer for LA wildfire recovery

    Each year, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) deploys hundreds of trained personnel and resources across the United States and its territories to aid in disaster relief efforts. In the aftermath of hurricanes, fires, floods or infrastructure crises, USACE emergency operations is responsible for coordinating and executing several missions in post-disaster environments. As part of this response, ERDC employees volunteer their time and expertise, making a tangible impact in communities affected by disaster.

    A decommissioned air traffic control tower at Plant 42 falls April 29 during its demolition at the Air Force installation in Palmdale, California. Crews used an excavator and cable system to safely bring down the structure, which had its support beams cut in advance.

    End of an era: USACE, Air Force remove aging tower at Plant 42

    A distinctive structure on the Palmdale horizon came down April 29 as the original air traffic control tower at U.S. Air Force Plant 42 was demolished, ending a chapter in the facility’s aviation history that dates back more than 60 years.
  • For approximately four years (1968-1972), the Trinidad Control Tower stood alone until negotiations over water rights were resolved and construction could resume on the dam.

    Lasting Legacy: A Father and Son’s Role in Building, Maintaining Trinidad Dam

    Louie and Rick Torres’s roots run deep in southern Colorado along the Purgatoire River and are intertwined with the history of Trinidad Dam. Louie helped build the dam back in the 1960s and 70s. Louie then worked on the dam's maintenance until his retirement, and his son continues to work at the dam.

    From risk to recovery: Arborists aid fire survivors

    Following the Southern California wildfires, many survivors returned to find their homes destroyed, with little left standing on their property. Among the few things that often remained were trees.
