Corps hosts public meeting for shoreline mitigation study
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers hosted a public meeting to discuss the ongoing San Diego County Shoreline (Oceanside) Mitigation Study Sept. 16 at the Oceanside Civic Center Library. The study aims to mitigate shoreline erosion and other impacts, resulting from the construction of U.S. Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton Harbor, which has interrupted sediment transport along the coast and contributed to erosion of southward beaches.

Corps, partners break ground on new Simulations Center at Fort Irwin
Senior leaders with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Fort Irwin broke ground March 23 on a new Simulations Center at the installation, which is home to the National Training Center. “It has been a 10-year journey to get us here, but this is a critical inflection point in Fort Irwin’s history, and, more importantly, in where we are going as an Army,” said Brig. Gen. Curtis Taylor, commanding general of the National Training Center. “It just so happens that this project came to fruition in just the right time.”

Corps, partners sign agreement to move forward on study to aid Salton Sea
On a sunny December day near the shores of the Salton Sea, three agencies signed an agreement to collaborate on ways to aid the ailing lake. Representatives with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District, California Department of Water Resources and the Salton Sea Authority signed a cost-share agreement during a Dec. 16 outdoor ceremony at the North Shore Yacht Club in Mecca.

Corps’ chief signs report to move Port of Long Beach deep-draft navigation project forward
Officials with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District and the Port of Long Beach are one step closer to improving navigation efficiencies and safety for existing and prospective commerce within the port with the signing of a chief’s report for the project. The Port of Long Beach Deep-Draft Navigation Feasibility Report – which aims to improve and modify existing channels in the port by deepening them to accommodate larger cargo ships – was signed Oct. 14 by Lt. Gen. Scott Spellmon, the Corps’ commanding general and 55th U.S. Army chief of engineers, at the Corps’ headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Army Civil Works announces invitations to apply for dam safety loans; $2 billion in potential federal financing for California
The Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers today announced the first set of proposals being invited to apply for loans under the new Corps Water Infrastructure Financing Program (CWIFP). Eight of the invited applicants are in California and the financing associated with these applications could result in dam safety work on 37 dams throughout the state.

USACE issues permit authorizing California wildfire mitigation activities in waters of the United States
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has issued Regional General Permit (RGP) 10, authorizing activities associated with wildfire mitigation that may involve discharge of dredged or fill material into waters of the United States and/or work in or affecting navigable waters of the United States, including wetlands, within the State of California.
