Sacramento District Employees Recognized for Medical Emergency Response, Reflect on Workplace Preparedness

When a colleague at Sacramento District headquarters said she wasn’t feeling well, Jerilynn Hilmar alerted those nearby, Shelley McCoy stayed close to provide comfort and reassurance, and Elizabeth “Ellie” Hayes went downstairs to notify building security and escort first responders back to the scene. No cardiopulmonary resuscitation was performed and no automated external defibrillator was deployed, but their quick, coordinated response ensured she got the medical attention she needed. For that, the three received a commander’s coin from Sacramento District Commander Col. Robert McTighe on Dec. 8, 2025. They’re grateful for it, though they’re quick to put it in perspective.
USACE-Albuquerque District holds dam safety exercise for Abiquiu Dam

The Albuquerque District held a Dam Safety Tabletop Exercise for Abiquiu Dam at the Abiquiu Rural Event Center in Abiquiu, N.M., May 7, 2026. The purpose of the exercise was to improve mutual awareness among Abiquiu Dam stakeholders of the roles and duties, communication needs, and coordination efforts necessary in the event of a dam emergency.
LA District commander hosts farewell town hall, awards ceremony

USACE to host town hall to discuss Whittier Narrows Dam Safety project April 16 in Pico Rivera
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in collaboration with the City of Pico Rivera, will be hosting a town hall to discuss Whittier Narrows Dam and its upcoming safety project. The town hall is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. April 16 at the Main Auditorium at Pico Park, 9528 Beverly Blvd., Pico Rivera.

USACE awards construction contract for Whittier Narrows Dam Safety project
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District awarded the construction phase of a contract March 23 to Barnard Construction Company, Inc., headquartered in Bozeman, Montana, for the Whittier Narrows Dam Safety project. The more than $735-million contract enables USACE and Barnard to complete construction of critical safety improvements to Whittier Narrows Dam – a high-risk dam that helps manage flood risk for more than 1 million people and $200 billion in property between the dam and the Pacific Ocean.
