Tule River Spillway project document out for public review

Published Oct. 8, 2019

SACRAMENTO, California – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District will hold a public meeting to discuss the draft environmental assessment released last month that outlines the Tule River Spillway Enlargement Project at Success Lake in Tulare County.

The project includes widening the Richard L. Schafer Dam Emergency Spillway from 200 to 365 feet wide, and realigning a portion of Worth Drive-Avenue 146 from its current route in the spillway footprint.

The road realignment will reduce road closures during high water encroachment and provide access for future work to improve the existing spillway and Schafer Dam.

The project will also include increasing storage capacity in Success Lake, helping improve flood risk reduction for the region.

The Draft EA is available for review on the project web page at https://go.usa.gov/xVvCR and at the Corps’ Lake Success field office at 29330 State Highway 190, in Porterville, California.

The public meeting is scheduled for October 8, 2019, to discuss the document, ask questions of Corps staff, and to submit comments for the record. Comments will be accepted until Oct. 27, 2019.

The public meeting will be held:

Oct. 8, 2019; 4-7 p.m.
Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall
1900 W. Olive Avenue
Porterville, CA 93257

The former Success Dam was officially renamed earlier this month to the Richard L. Schafer Dam after the longtime Central Valley resident and Tule River Water Master.

Schafer Dam and Success Lake, which was constructed by the Corps in 1961, is operated by the Corps for flood control and storage of irrigation water. Recreational facilities at the lake were added after the dam was completed. The dam is located on the Tule River about 6 miles east of the City of Porterville.
