    Albuquerque, N.M. -- Ryan Gronewold, planning branch chief, USACE-Albuquerque District, briefs a civil works levee project to R.D. James, assistant secretary of the Army for civil works, during his visit, Jan. 22. James met with project sponsors and key stakeholders to discuss civil works projects in the Middle Rio Grande region including the Bernalillo to Belen Flood Protection and Sandia to Isleta Ecosystem Restoration.

  • U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District Deputy Commander Col. Daryll Fust speaks to community members and the media about the USACE role in the Navigable Waters Protection Rule Jan. 23. Fust joined EPA Pacific Southwest Regional Administrator Mike Stoker and Rep. Paul Gosar. The event was hosted by Arizona Department of Environmental Quality Director Misael Cabrera.

    Final: Navigable Waters Protection Rule

    The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Army released the Navigable Waters Protection Rule Jan. 23. The rule provides a new and final definition for Waters of the United States.

    Ready for the “Big One”? The Corps studies and prepares for the worst case

    Scientists tell us the Pacific Northwest is due for a very large earthquake—possibly as large as magnitude 9.2—from the Cascadia Subduction Zone (CSZ) off the Pacific coast, stretching from northern California to southern British Columbia. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Portland District has been evaluating potential impacts to its dams in the Willamette, Rogue and Columbia River regions to prepare for such an event.
  • Nina Presley, administrative officer with the Planning Division, received the Kevin Inada Employee of the Quarter Award during the Fourth Quarter Awards Ceremony Jan. 10 at the LA District’s Headquarters building in downtown LA. Presley received the award for her work processing projected recruitment actions for the Planning Division for fiscal year 2020, as well as assisting managers with completing regulatory requirements. Additionally, she ensured last-minute training requirements were met and that her division had equipment and supplies for its FY19 budget.

    LA District employees receive recognition for service during Fourth Quarter Award ceremony

    Twelve U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District employees received recognition for outstanding service, including a team of engineers that helped develop modeling to predict post-fire debris flows in the hopes of saving lives.

    Building relationships and infrastructure facilities with Kuwait

    USACE’s Middle East District recently began a design review with the Kuwaiti Air Force on $140 million worth of construction on a Kuwait FMS case to support Kuwait’s newly purchased F/A-18E/F Super Hornets. The design program is the continuance of a survey of existing facilities at Al Jaber air base that identified new hangars, parking aprons, maintenance facilities and other needed infrastructure to operate and maintenance the arriving F-18 fighter jets.
