    Military members pay tribute to Marvel comic book legend, Army veteran during Hollywood ceremony

    As a child, Maj. Scotty Autin loved reading Marvel comic books. One of his favorite characters was Gambit, a fictional quick-handed, card-playing thief from New Orleans. “Considering I’m from Louisiana, I was always drawn to Gambit,” said Autin, deputy commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District. “I read all the comics that featured him and watched the X-Men animated series just to see him. I remember as a 10-year-old, I would practice throwing playing cards just to be like him.” So when Autin was invited to participate in “Excelsior! A Celebration of the Amazing, Fantastic, Incredible and Uncanny Life of Stan Lee” Jan. 30 at The Creative Life, or TCL, Chinese Theatre, formerly known as Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, in Hollywood, it was an offer he couldn’t refuse.

    US Army Corps of Engineers closes California Parks and Recreation Areas

    As of Sunday, Oct. 6, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers closed public access to all parks and recreation facilities it operates in California as a result of the federal government shutdown. All Dam operations and other mission-critical safety and security functions will continue during the shutdown.

    Los Angeles County Public Works Deputy Director Mark Pestrella, Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky and Los Angeles District Commander Col. Mark Toy ceremonially turn dirt Feb. 22 for the start of the $7 million Tujunga Wash Ecosystem Restoration project that will extend greening along the sides of a 3/4-mile stretch of concrete channel in the San Fernando Valley that carries runoff from Hansen Dam to the Los Angeles River.

    LOS ANGELES--U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District and Los Angeles County officials broke ground Feb. 22 on a project designed to restore degraded habitat in the San Fernando Valley. Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, Public Works Deputy Director Mark Pestrella and District Commander Col. Mark Toy ceremonially turned dirt for the start of the $7 million Tujunga Wash Ecosystem Restoration project that will extend greening along the sides of a 3/4-mile stretch of concrete channel that carries runoff from Hansen Dam to the Los Angeles River.

Sam Farr's district office, Fort Hunter Liggett and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District broke ground a one-megawatt solar array in a ceremony at Fort Hunter Liggett, Calif., April 8, 2011.
